A toilet that keeps running may seem like a small problem, but it can waste a surprising amount of water over time. It can also point to worn parts inside the tank that need adjustment or replacement.
The good news is that many running toilet problems are caused by common parts such as the flapper, fill valve, flush valve, float, or chain.
Common Reasons a Toilet Keeps Running
1. Worn Flapper
The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the toilet tank. When it wears out, water can leak from the tank into the bowl, causing the toilet to refill repeatedly.
2. Chain Is Too Tight or Too Loose
If the chain connected to the flush handle is too tight, it may hold the flapper open. If it is too loose, the toilet may not flush correctly.
3. Float Is Set Too High
The float controls the tank water level. If it is set too high, water may flow into the overflow tube and keep the toilet running.
4. Faulty Fill Valve
The fill valve controls water entering the tank after a flush. If it wears out or sticks, the toilet may continue running or refill randomly.
5. Flush Valve or Overflow Tube Problems
If the flush valve assembly is damaged or the overflow tube is not working properly, water can continue moving through the tank.
How to Check a Running Toilet
Remove the tank lid and watch what happens after the toilet flushes. Check whether the flapper seals, whether water rises above the overflow tube, and whether the fill valve shuts off.
You can also place a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl.
When to Call a Plumber
Call a plumber if the toilet keeps running after basic adjustments, if parts are corroded, if the shut-off valve is stuck, if water appears around the base, or if you are unsure which part has failed.
A plumber can replace worn parts, adjust the tank, inspect the shut-off valve, and check for leaks around the toilet.
Can a Running Toilet Increase Your Water Bill?
Yes. A running toilet can waste water continuously, especially if the flapper leak or fill valve problem is constant. Fixing it early can help prevent unnecessary water use.
